Good Sport

Well, I spent the weekend with my good friends at a sporting event in an adjoining US state. I don't really follow sports much, maybe some minor league hockey, but that's only due to my husbands influence. He is an "idiot-savant" of sports statistics knowledge. I find it all confusing and therefore, uninteresting. At any rate, a few of my good friends are fans of this particular sport and each year they go to various events along with a larger group of folks. To complicate things a little, some of those larger group of folks are people from my workplace! I don't actually know them from work, or if I do, maybe just to see them, not to talk to them. I tend to try to keep to myself at work. Or at least I did, when I had a job. I am currently laid off. So, between these people and their spouses, who I did not know, and being in a place and at an event that is unfamiliar to me, I did not feel all that comfortable to say the least. I was also not comfortable drinking too much (and yes, this is one of those typically booze-soaked sports-party atmospheres) because I did not want to lose any sense of self-control in a situation that already had me feeling uncomfortable. Since my workplace is a hotbed of gossip I did not want anything to do with my behaviour getting back there through these "coworkers". Brothers, my ass!! That's not to say that I don't enjoy a good booze-fest every now and then. I most assuredly do...but I have to be in the right frame of mind. And around people that I am fairly comfortable with. This was not the case this weekend. Unlike last weekend when I attained the dubious title of "most entertaining drunk" at my sisters pool party. But I started feeling more at ease by the end of the weekend. Maybe I'll feel better about it next year, if I go. It will help if Mac can go next year too. He was supposed to be there this year but is still (eight weeks and counting) out of town on business. The only reason I agreed to buy the tickets in the first place was so that he could experience this particular sport in person. Ah. C'est la vie. I'm still glad I went and spent time with my friends and experienced something new, met some nice new people and got out of town for a couple of days.

Midnight Blessings

It's midnight and I really don't know what I'm doing up this late "blogging" of all things. I guess I must have something on my mind that needs to be said. I'm in my 30's and recently married for the first time. My husband is away on business and has been for about 6 weeks now. I'm finally starting to miss him. I love him. But he works primarily from home and is here ALL THE TIME. So on a regular basis I get virtually no time to myself. Which I need. Desperately. He doesn't really like leaving the house much. He's VERY much a couch potato, with only a token interest in his own health. A guy I used to work with recently died of a heart-attack at age 49. His wife found him dead on their couch in the morning. I'm afraid I'll find Mac like that one day. I finally got married, I don't want to be a widow. So, the first two or three weeks of alone-ness in my own home, I must admit, were pure BLISS! I LOVED IT! But now, since I am not working, I am getting bored. I don't really want to go out everyday, because then I spend money I am not presently earning. Not that I'm in dire straits, but I will need to start seriously looking for a job in the next few weeks. Not just haphazardly as I've been so far. There have been a couple of jobs that have actually interested me. I'm hoping to hear from one of them soon. Hopefully... I must admit though, since being downsized in April, it has been a lovely summer. I've never had a summer off in my adult life before. It's quite a luxury. I generally get up between 8 & 9 am, have a leisurely breakfast whilst perusing the morning paper and then head out to the gym around 10:30. Spend an hour there working out and then tanning (every other day) and head home for lunch after running whatever errands I might have. Then it's all about daytime TV. I've pretty much got the whole daytime schedule memorized. Either that or I try to make arrangements to meets friends for lunch downtown. That's nice too. Gives me an excuse to get dressed up. Do my hair. Put on makeup. Wear jewellery. Which otherwise I would never bother doing. Still, as much time as I've had on my hands, you'd think I'd have become a better housekeeper. I guess I was fooling myself all this time using the "no time" excuse. Yeah right! I am just not a good housekeeper. I'm trying. It's not bad. It's a lot more organized that it was. Got some stuff to do before Mac gets home. Like finish organizing his home office to keep him out of my hair during the day. Put some pictures on the wall to make it feel more homey. Put up the curtains in our bedroom. Organize a few files. That man attracts paper like Charlie Brown's friend Pigpen attracts dirt. Just seems to follow him everywhere like a cloud of dust. Oh well, I guess if that's my worst complaint I feel pretty lucky. I know I'm lucky. No...blessed actually. Right now my life the envy of many, and I try not to forget that. I am blessed and grateful in so many ways. I have a wonderful husband who is working hard to try to lay the foundation for a successful future for us. I have a wonderful home in a great city. I am blessed to have amazing family and friends. I am blessed with the gift of time, now that I am between jobs. I am blessed to not have to worry about money right now. I know that soon I will be blessed with a new job that I will enjoy. Thank you Lord, for my many, many blessings!
